This is the private burial ground of the Sutherland family with memorial stones from the time of Cromartie, 4th Duke (1851-1913). Earlier burials took place at Kirkton, Golspie where the Duchess Countess Elizabeth set up a memorial tablet in the wall that bounds the A9 at Kirkton. At Dornoch Cathedral many of the Earls of Sutherland were interred in the S transept from 1247 to 1733. There the 1st Duke was buried in 1833 but his coffin was later transferred to be beside his wife in the cathedral vault. When the young 19th Earl and his wife, Mary Maxwell, died at Bath within a few days of each other in 1766 they were buried in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh. Beneath the chancel floor of Dornoch Cathedral is the 19th century burial vault of the family which the Duchess Countess had made as part of the restoration of the church after her husband's death. There she was buried in 1839.
