Monument record MHG39806 - Enclosure or Annexe to Broch, Langwell Tulloch

This broch was visited by Headland Archaeology in the course of a pre-afforestation survey (NMRS MS 899/15, no.16). A large stone and turf enclosure, extending N from the outer broch enclosure was recorded in addition to the broch remains previously noted by RCAHMS (1911).

This broch is generally as described by the previous OS field investigator. Although it has been extensively robbed, the common Caithness 'mound on mound' profile is evident. The broch mound measures approximately 16m NE-SW by 14.5m and is 1.5m high.

Langwell Tulloch (NAT) Broch (NR) OS 6" map, (1964)

The mutilated remains of a broch, now a shapeless mass of rubble measuring approximately 28 by 32m. Part of the face of the outer wall of the broch is visible on S side and a wall, probably later, forming an outer enclosure or annexe, encloses the broch on the W, S and E.

On S side of road up Langwell Water and some 200 yds W of the wall which divides the woodlands from the moor beyond the garden, are the very confused remains of a construction. Much stone has been removed from it, and its original character is not apparent. It is known as 'Langwell Tulloch'.
