Full Description

At NH 3702 2851 is a denuded, circular, stone-walled hut measuring c 13.0m in diameter between the centres of a wall spread to c 3.5m all round. The 'simple' entrance is in the E.S.E. Stone clearance has been piled against the hut on the N side of the entrance and against the N & W arcs. In the vicinity of the hut are about thirty stone clearance heaps, probably from contemporary cultivation plots.

(NH 3702 2851) Unannotated circle. This hut circle is situated on a shelf above the River Enrick and is generally as described by the previous investigator. No field plots are evident.
Published survey (1/10,000) correct.

---------------------------
This site was visited during a walkover survey in 1999. Only 23 clearance cairns were identified, of which eight are outside the RSPB reserve. It is possible that more cairns lie to the north west of the hut circle on the other side of the fence, as this area was not investigated as part of the survey. Some cairns are circular, varying in diameter from 2m to 5m; others are rectangular, varying in size from 3m by 2.5m to 7m by 5m. The height ranges from 20cm to 80cm, with most being between 20cm and 50cm. The vegetation cover varies, including moss, heather, grass and bracken, and all combinations of these; some stones are usually visible. <1>
