Full Description
This township is situated on a grass-grown gravel ridge above the flood plains of the Rivers Calder and Spey to the E of the District Council Travellers Site. It comprises the footings of eight buildings (KING95 778-85), a corn-drying kiln (KING95 786) and two enclosures, one of which is attached to the side of a building (KING95 781). A further building which is shown on the current edition of the 1:2500 OS map (1969) at the E end of the site has been destroyed by quarrying.
Two of the buildings are relatively small, measuring 5.8m by 2.4m (KING95 799) and 6.5m by 2.9m (KING95 781) internally. The other buildings (KING95 778, 780, 782-5) range from 8m by 3.5 (KING95 784) to 11.8m by 4.1m (KING95 785) internally. Three of the larger buildings are divided into either two (KING95 782-3) or three (KING95 785) compartments. A compartment in one of these buildings (KING95 783) is dished, suggesting that it may have been a byre. Except for one building (KING95 782) with turf footings, all the buildings are stone-founded. A building (KING95 778), which has been partially overlain by a dump of spoil, appears to have been L-shaped; all the other buildings are rectangular. What may be a small turf hut lies some 10m to the NNW of KING95 784.
The kiln (KING95 786) lies to the NE of an enclosure on a lower terrace. The bowl measures 1.6m in diameter within a faced bank spread to 1.2m in thickness and 0.5m in height. Adjacent to the flue, which is on the SSE, there is what may have been the fire-pit, enclosed by two low turf banks extending from the bowl. Set level with the lip of the bowl to the NNW there is a barn which measures internally 2.7m from ENE to WSW by 2m transversely.
