Monument record MHG41551 - Chambered Cairn, Lonmore

A sub-circular mound of stones, measuring 20m NW-SE by 18m and 0.5m high, was found during field investigation on a false crest, on a SE-facing slope. It is retained around most of its periphery by a kerb of contiguous rough boulders up to 0.5m in height. In the SE arc are the remains of a passage. Two adjacent slabs protruding through turf survive of the south side of this passage and further into mound, at right angles to the passage, is an upright slab showing 0.1m high. Overlying north side of entrance is a probable displaced lintel stone.
Within mound towards NW quarter is an oval stone-walled hut circle, 6.5m NW-SE by 5m internally within a wall spread to 2.5m but sparse in the NW arc where the inner wall face can be seen. Two upright stones in the SE on line with the passage to the mound are probably portal stones though no gap remains. The mound displays many of the characteristics of a chambered cairn probably of Orkney-Cromarty form into which a later hut has been inserted, though there is a slight possibility that the kerb may be the outer face of an enclosure contemporary with the hut.

Re-examination of the site reinforces its classification as a chambered cairn, but there is doubt that the feature within is a hut circle; it may be later clearance of cairn material and subsequent use as a sheep shelter.
