Full Description

NC83SW 11 814 311.

Centred at NC 814311 is a settlement of six hut circles ('A'-'F'), situated on gently sloping N-facing moorland beside the Allt A' Chota. 'A', immediately adjacent to the burn, is somewhat unusual. It measures 6m ESE-WNW by 4.5m within a wall 0.7m high and 1.5m wide. It displays two opposing entrances in the ENE and WNW. The former placed at the upper end of the hut is flanked by two portal stones with small stones edging the gap. At the other entrance the wall widens to a spread of nearly 3.0m with a portal stone visible on the S side. This is probably the original entrance with one in the ENE being a later insertion.
'B' is also out of the ordinary. In the S arc the wall extends to form a sub-rectangular internal chamber 3.5m x 2.5m internally. The central oval area is 8.5m N-S x 7m within a broken orthostatic wall 1.4m wide where measurable. One facing stone is unusually large at 1m x 0.6m x 0.4m thick. A vague gap in the north may represent the entrance. A pile of stones, possibly field clearance, lies within the hut.
'C' is a clearly defined plain hut 11.5m ESE-WNW x 10.5m within a turf and heather-covered wall spread to 2.5m. The entrance is in the ESE. Two gaps to the NE of the entrance have been caused by mutilated.
'D'is an ill- defined hut visible as a platform 11m E-W x 8.5m within slight traces of a wall entered from the E.
'E' and 'F' are similar in construction with heather-covered walls spread to 2m, widening a little at the entrances in the E. Internally they measure 9.5m E-W x 8m and 12.5m in diameter respectively.
A few clearance heaps and lynchets lie in the immediate vicinity of the huts, but no plots were seen.
Surveyed at 1:10,560. Visited by OS (J B) 28 Feburary 1977
