Monument record MHG44828 - Berriedale

At ND 1064 2571 is a small enclosure or hut-circle, 'A', 11m in diameter formed by a stone-revetted earth-and-stone bank 1.5m broad and 0.4m high. This wall has spread considerably on the E side. The entrance, 1m wide, is in the SE, and an earth-and-stone bank runs SE from its W side. Some stone in the interior forms a horse-shoe shaped compartment on either side of the entrance.
About 90m to the W is a hut circle, 'B' (ND 1055 2570) 6.5m in diameter formed by a wall of stones 1m broad and 0.4m high on the E side. The entrance, in SE, is 0.7m wide. At ND 1057 2568, some 30m SE of this hut are the remains of part of an old field bank.
At ND 1054 2562, about 30m N of 'B' are the fragmentary remains of an enclosure, 'C', measuring 21m NE-SW by 1.2m broad and 0.3m high in places.
There are several unsurveyable features (remains of banks, etc) in this area.

On an E-facing slope are the two hut circles (A and B) described by OS (WDJ), situated in an area of contemporary cultivation.
Hut circle 'A', on a natural shelf, measures 8.5m in diameter within a wall, 0.5m average height, spread to 2m, expanding to a breadth of 2.5m at the entrance in the SE arc.
Recent heather burning has revealed four or five large stones on edge defining the inner wall face. A clearance heap abuts the hut circle on the E side, and inside the hut are a number of large stones, which may represent the remains of an internal division, or it could be later dumping.
'B' is a very well-preserved, having been exposed by heather burning. It measures 6.1m in diameter within a wall about 1.0m original width. The inner face, of contiguous boulders on edge, up to 0.5m high, is visible around the NE arc, but there is no trace of an outer face. At the W side of the entrance in the SE is an upright portal stone.
Enclosure 'C' is a small field or perhaps stock enclosure, probably contemporary with the hut circles; there is no evidence of early modern settlement in the vicinity. There is no trace of the additional hut noted by Mrs Sabine, but in the area are a number of stone clearance heaps, some with their centres excavated, which resemble hut circles as well as meandering field walls representing a contemporary field system.
