Full Description

This site is depicted on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey mpa c.1875 as a smithy. The site was visited during a walkover survey in August 2008, but is unlikely to be affected by the proposed overhead power line. Two buildings remain on the site, a house and a byre, the latter of which is believed to be the original forge building.

The longhouse, which is still inhabited, measures 18.5m x 5.4m (S end); 5.5m (N end). The N extent (picture right) appears to represent a separate building event; the roofing here is somewhat lower than the middle and S sections of the building composite.

The byre/ forgemeasures 12.8m x 5.15m. Two doorways are visible, 5.5m apart, each measuring 1.1m in width, in the E facing elevation. Beneath the W facing elevation, footings are visible at the base of the elevation. These spread W of the wall and may represent a building footprint that pre-dates the present elevations. A newly inserted doorway and window are visible at the N end of this elevation. The dimensions and relationships of these buildings are recorded in KDN08: Dimensioned Sketch No. 1. <1>
