Full Description

NMRS Report: (19/02/2007 12:45:13)
ND23SW 8008 unlocated

Formerly entered as NJ23NE 8007 (unlocated).

NLO: Millden Links [name centred NJ 968 158]
Lybster [name: ND 248 355]
Forse [name: ND 220 341]
Aberdeen [name: NJ 95 05].

Glasgow, 10th Jan., a chest was washed ashore a day or two ago near Millden, a few miles North of Aberdeen, filled with wearing apparel, and a letter was also found in the chest addressed to "Carl Carlsen, barque ALICE MAX, Captain Arnesen, Sundswall". The letter had been received in Sundswall in August, and the supposition is that either the ALICE MAX has foundered during the recent storms, or that the sailor to who the letter was addressed has joined the WILLIAM, of Mandal, or one of the other vessels which were lost recently on the Aberdeenshire coast.

Wick, 11th Jan., a lifebuoy marked "ALICE MOSS" (?ALICE MAX), and a nameboard marked "PFEIL" have been picked up at Forse. A quantity of broken timber, &c., of little value, have also been washed ashore in the same vicinity: and what seems to be one of the masts of a sunken wreck is visible some distance off shore, between Lybster and Forse. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4577).

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary, being derived from the reported locations of discovery of wreckage. The vessel presumably foundered out at sea, possibly beyond Scottish waters.
The loss of this vessel is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998).
