Full Description

NMRS Report: (08/11/2005)
ND24SE 70 26384 44907

This gravel-pit has been dug into E end of the summit of Hornybach, a low rise within an extensive area of boggy moorland to the E of the Lybster to Watten public road. Irregular on plan, the pit measures 50m from NE to SW by 44m transversely and up to 2.8m in depth. Spoil lies on all sides save the N, where it may have been removed for the construction of the causeway that carries the track eastwards on to the open moor. A branch of the track runs into the NW corner of the pit, where a small exposure of rock on the S and a scatter of flagstones indicate that stone was also extracted.
