Full Description
NMRS Report: (19/07/2005)
ND34SW 159 33198 42849
The remains of what is locally thought to be a magazine are visible at the head of a steep-sided dry-gully on the NE flank of the Hill of Ulbster, 475m N of the abandoned radar station ND34SW 290. Subrectangular on plan, it is sunk into the slope to a depth of 1.6m on the N, W and S, measuring about 7.3m from NNW to SSE by 4.2m internally. On the E there is a thick, stony bank up to 3m in thickness and 1.2m in height. The entrance seems to have been by way of a narrow passage that breaks through the top of the slope on the S side, but it was obscured by vegetation on the date of visit.
If this was a magazine, it may have been associated with the possible machine-gun/observation post in the interior of the Ormiegill chambered cairn (ND34SW 2), which stands 80m to the NNE.
