Full Description

NMRS Report: (20/07/2005)
ND34SW 173 32593 41804

The remains of this farmstead, which comprises the ruin of a single building, are situated at the edge of a cultivated field 95m W of the house at Field. The building measures about 10.3m from NNW to SSE by 5.2m transversely over clay-bonded walls 0.6m in thickness. These stand to their wall-heads at the S end and on the E side, but the N end and the W side have been reduced to little more than spreads of rubble. At the N end of the E side there is a possible outshot, but it is open-sided on the S. No outshot is recorded on either the 1st or 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map, which both show a longer range than the single building that survives today (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix).
Field is described in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (Caithness No. 13, p. 262) as `two small farms in the occupation of D Grant and A Young, and the property of A Sharpe Esq. Of Bruan Lodge'. The range was unroofed by 1907.
