Full Description

NMRS Report: (24/04/2006)
ND34SW 322 32049 42353 & 32043 42354

Two small quarries are situated some 580m SSW of Whiteleen farmsteading (ND34SW 126), on the S side of a trackway leading W to open moorland. The E pit (YARROWS04 167) measures 7.5m from NE to SW by 5.5m transversely and 2m in depth; the W pit (YARROWS04 168), which is separated from the first by a baulk only 1.5m in breadth, measures 4m from NE to SW by 3.5m transversely and 1.3m in depth. The quarries lie within a larger area from which the topsoil has been removed and appear to have been opened to supply metalling for tracks in the vicinity. They are not depicted on either the 1st or 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix).
