Three small limestone quarries are situated on an E-facing slope immediately W of the A99(T) public road S of an un-named farmstead at Markwell. The northermost (YARROWS04 287) is roughly oval on plan, measuring 14.5m from NW to SE by 9m transversely and up to 0.9m in depth on the W. Some limestone slabs lie exposed at the N end of the largely grass-grown pit. The second quarry (YARROWS04 288), which is situated immediately to the S, measures 8m from N to S by 4m transversely and up to 0.7m in depth on the W. The third quarry (YARROWS04 290) lies a further 7.5m SSW and measures 8.5m from NNE to SSW by 3.6m transversely and up to 0.7m in depth on the W.
None of the quarries is depicted on either the 1st or 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix; 1907, sheet xxix).
