Full Description

NMRS Report: (24/05/2006 08:06:36)
ND34SW 456 ND 32020 41146

A farmstead comprising a rectangular building and an enclosed garden plot lies in improved pasture on the E side of Loch Watenan. Now roofless, the building (YARROWS04 90) has two compartments and measures 12.1m from ESE to WNW by 2.75m transversely within coursed rubble walls 0.55m in thickness and standing up to 2.1m in height at the wall-head; an outshot 2.4m long adjoins its ESE end. The WNW, lower, compartment is a dwelling, with a central door flanked by two windows in its SSW wall and a fireplace in the WNW gable; one of the window is blocked. Access is available internally between the two compartments, but the upper compartment also has an external door in the SSW wall, and a window lies directly opposite.
A circular stack stand (YARROWS04 416), formed by roughly laid blocks, lies 7.6m upslope from the ESE end of the building, and there are heaps of cleared stones spread across the field, the largest below the garden enclosure. The building is depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix), which shows it and the enclosure occupying a narrow strip of unimproved ground between two fields.
