A galleried promontory dun consisting of a wall cutting off a headland (Rudh an Dunain) which measures 80ft by 36ft in extent. The wall, built of large, squared blocks, is 12ft thick at the base and stands to a maximum height of approx. 9ft The entrance, near the N End, is checked for a door, and galleries can be distinguished within the wall.
RCAHMS 1928; R W Feachem 1963.
A galleried promontory dun as described above.
Visited by OS (C F W) 11 April 1961.
===================================================
This is an unusual and impressive site. The wall cuts off a small headland from cliff edge to cliff edge, and still stands to a considerable height for much of its length. The construction is very reminicent of brochs, with an apparent passage and possible staircase within the thickness of the wall and an scarcement on the seaward side. The wall is slightlly curved, with the bow facing landward, but there is no sign of a return along the clifftop.
The entrance arrangements noted by the OS are still visible.
JW visited in the company of M.Wildgoose, S.Birch and M.Carmichael on 30/5/02.
