Full Description

NMRS Report: (14/11/2005)
NG53NE 162 5866 3554

The ruins of a longhouse were recorded here during a field survey of the Suisnish area of Raasay by ACFA, who have conducted surveys on the island every year since 1995. It measures 11.4m x 3.8m internally and the drystone walls are double-skinned with a rubble core, standing to an average height of 1.5m and 0.8m wide. The corners of the building are rounded and it stands on a substantial construction platform 1m high, which extends outwards for 1.8m along the E face. The E wall has an entrance 1m wide. There are a number of old, turf-covered corrugated iron sheets inside the building, showing possible re-use at some late stage. To the N of the building is an irregular enclosure, 9.2m x 5.6m, with no obvious entrance.
