Thurso, 18th Mar. `During a severe gale from NE to N & NW on the night of the 16th inst., the BELFAST, Clark, of Liverpool, bound to Monte Video [Montevideo, Argentina], was driven on shore at Armadale: master, chief mate, and seven men drowned.'

Registration: Liverpool. Built 1839. 297 tons burthern.
(Location of loss cited as N58 33.5 W4 5.0).

This loss is assigned to the vicinity of Armadale on the Pentland Firth, rather than the place of the same name on the Sleat Peninsula (Sound of Sleat), Skye. The report of the loss at Thurso is considered significant in this regard.
