Full Description

NMRS Report: (18/11/2005)
NN59SE 41 5854 9269

Two concrete platforms and associated remains were recorded here during a detailed desktop and walkover survey of Strathmashie Forest ahead of a proposed heritage trail. Enough archaeological features were found to make the trail worthwhile. The first platform is 11.8m x 4.8m and has drainage channels that lead to underground drainage pipes. The other platform was too overgrown to be measured. A dump of bottles and other rubbish was located nearby. A mug with a date of 1941 was found amongst the rubbish. The site is associated with the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit, which was active in this area in the 1940s.
