Full Description

NMRS Report: (28/11/2005)
NN59SE 66 5890 9072 to 5889 9075

The remains of part of a light-gauge railway was recorded during a detailed archaeological survey of Strathmashie Community Forest near Laggan, Highland. The railway was built and used by the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit during World War 2 to transport timber and equipment. The remains consist of parallel timbers, 1m apart, and with iron nails protruding. Lengths of iron rails are present below the timbers and in other areas. The survey was carried out to assess the evidence for past human use and to ascertain whether there was enough archaeology to develop a heritage trail in the forest.
