Rowens Farm now lies deserted on reclaimed moorland, its row of ten regular rectangular fields contrasting with its buildings which are disposed around an irregular courtyard with a barn detached to the NW. The buildings include a long range on the NW with cottage and flagstone-stalled byres, a cart shed with lean-to on the NE, a byre with lean-to piggery on the SE, and a stable with turnip store on the NW. A platform against the E side of the barn supported a diesel engine and powered the threshing machine, replacing the horse-engine shown here on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxiii). The buildings are all of single-storey height and of roughly coursed flagstone, with slate, flagstone or corrugated asbestos roofs. The site was visited in 2000.
