Full Description

NMRS Report: (20/02/2007 09:01:08)
NJ01NW 33 NJ 03242 18329

The remains of four buildings, a limekiln and an enclosure are situated in two fields of pasture between the modern farmsteading of Allanroy (NJ01NW 14), immediately to the NW, and a modern house, Bynackbeg, to the SE. The northernmost building (NJ 03243 18392) sits on the floodplain of the Dorback Burn and is a substantial stone-built structure, measuring 12.5m from NNE to SSW by 4.9m transversely over walls reduced to footings 0.5m in height. The interior has been set into the slight, W-facing slope to a depth of at least 0.4m and there is a entrance in the middle of the WNW side. The limekiln (NJ 03276 18363) is situated 35m SE of this building, set into the NW face of a steep river terrace. Overall, it measures about 7.9m from NW to SE by 5.2m transversely, but the pot has been reduced to little more than a grass-grown hollow.
The three remaining buildings and the enclosure sit on the terrace above the other building and the kiln. One (NJ 03244 18335) stands immediately W of the enclosure, which is defined by a thick, grass-grown bank. Rectangular on plan, the building measures 11.6m from NNE to SSW by 5m transversely over low footings; no entrance is visible and two outshots attached to the SSW end have been disturbed by a modern track. The two remaining buildings lie 36m to the WNW and form an F-shaped range (NJ 03195 18337). The southern building is T-shaped, with the bar of the T orientated N and S, and the leg of the T extending E, the other, is a simple rectangular building attached to the N end.
All of the buildings and the enclosure are depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet LX); none of the buildings is shown on the 2nd edition of the map (1902, sheet LX); the limekiln is not depicted on either map.
