Full Description

NMRS Report: (27/03/2007 14:47:48)
NJ02NE 85 NJ 08026 27645

A row of three cottages stand on a terrace on the E bank of the Burn of Cromdale 440m NE of Balmenach Distillery (NJ02NE 9). The cottage at the S end of the row measures 13.6m from NNW to SSE by 5m transversely over lime-mortared walls up to 3m in height at the S gable, which contains a fireplace with a cast iron lintel. An entrance in the middle of the WSW side leads out into a small garden. All that is now visible of the cottage in the middle of the row is its NNW end, including the NW corner. The cottage at the N end of the row measures 12m from NNW to SSE by 4m transversely over walls up to 0.3m high. Its entrance is in the SSW side and it stands on a platform that has been leveled into the slope on the E to a depth of 1m.
All three cottages are depicted roofed on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire 1874, sheet xxxiii) and they are annotated 'Cottartown'. The settlement retained this name into the early 20th century, but by this time the cottage at the N end of the row had been abandoned and it is not depicted on the 2nd edition of the map (Inverness-shire 1905, xxxiii NW). The other two cottages are shown roofed
Visited by RCAHMS (TIP, AGCH) 28 September 2006.
