Full Description

NMRS Report: (21/11/2007 08:20:54)
NM48SW 16 405 801

Five buildings and two enclosures annotated as yards are depicted at Gallanach on an estate map of 1809. The buildings are arranged in two groups, lying either side of a burn that drains an area of boggy ground to the SSE. The three buildings on the W are arranged in a U-shape with its open side to the N, and probably lie beneath the present steading. The larger of the two enclosures is also situated on this side of the burn, lying to the SSW at the foot of an E-facing slope. This area is now within the enclosed pasture fields of Gallanach farm, and nothing can be seen of the enclosure.
Similarly, no trace of the two buildings and the enclosure depicted on the E side of the burn can now be found, but this too lies within the enclosed fields. The buildings are arranged in an L-shape, the southern of them forming one side of the enclosure.
The present steading, which has a horse-engine platform, has been modified on at least two occasions, as can be seen by comparing the depictions that appear on successive editions of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire, Island of Muck, 1880, sheet lxxii; Argyllshire, Island of Muck, 1903, sheet lxxii).
