Full Description

Behind 27 Society Street is the old Barking Yard, where fishermen preserved their nets and sails by soaking them in a brew of tree bark - or 'cutch' - boiled up in large kettles. Overalls were soaked in boiled linseed oil to create waterproof 'oilskins'. The yard was maintained by Nairn Fishermen's Society who took a fee for the use of a kettle. Chimneys may still survive on the site - but this has not been verified by a visit. <1>
