Monument record MHG5132 - Caroline House

(NG 4193 4783). On a platform set into Caroline Hill is the ruin of Caroline House. Very little is known of its early history locally but a late 18th century, early 19th century date seems probable. It is said to have been built by a Macdonald who had lived in America (hence the name Caroline), and its last occupant was one Jessie Macleod, aunt to the Macdonalds of Skeabost. When she died c. 1882 the house was deliberatley razed (Information from Mr Gillies, Tote, Skeabost).
Today only the SE gable end remains 7.0m wide, 1.0m thick and 7.0m high, built of rubble masonry and mortar. The plan can be traced and seems to have been simple oblong, 14.0m long with an addition at it NW corner 7.0m square. The building stood on a large semi-circular platform set into the hillside and the approach was by means of a road from the SE. An iron railing formerly surrounded the building but this itself is now ruined.
