Full Description

Plaque on cairn reads;
'This cairn is erected on the spot where Colin Campbell of Glenure was murdered on 14th May 1752.'

The cairn came into being when visitors to the spot each added a stone to the heap. At some time, possibly around 1952, a generous layer of cement mortar had been applied to the cairn in a presumed attempt to add permanence to the structure. By the summer of 1995 the mortar had cracked to the point of being dangerously unstable. A report, linked to this record, details the work that was carried out in 1996 to reconstruct the cairn. Apparently the cairn had already been rebuilt from scratch by the Stewart Society in 1911. <1>

The state of the cairn prior to reconstruction is recorded in a Historic Scotland plan dated 13 June 1995. <2>
