Full Description
A small, rectangular, two-celled structure was surveyed as part of a Scotland's Rural Past project. The structure was well laid out with a stone built partition wall and was built of carefully selected stone with a clay mortar. Each cell of the structure is approximately 2.8m by 3m. Double-faced wall lines (C2) can be discerned to the east and south of the structure creating two enclosures (C2.1 and C2.3). A possible former path runs from the southeast corner of the building across one of these enclosures (C2.1). It is possible that the enclosure walls are contemporary with the building, suggesting a small house and garden on the edge of Culkein township.
At some stage the structure partially collapsed on the eastern seaward side and the structure was later modified. Poor quality dry stone walling was erected to subdivide the structure with an entrance being created on the eastern side. A possible drain is also visible in the southern compartment (C1.4). Outside, another enclosure was created on top of the beach boulders. These modifications could indicate later use as sheep pens or similar. <1>
The building was unroofed by the time of the 1st edition Ordnance Survey c.1878. <2>
