Full Description

NG65SW 2 centred on 611 527

NG 611527 Caol Rona (Info from Miss Nicholson "Eilean Tigh", Clachan, Raasay) , a depopulated township, overlooking the strait of the same name which divides Raasay from Rona, comprises about 10 ruined houses, also 4 outbuildings and a yard.
From the condition of the buildings, though all roofless, Caol Rona was probably settled in comparatively recent times, possibly through the evictions of Mr Rainy of Edinburgh who bought the island in 1846 and who sent those who would no go to Australia, to Rona and the north end of Raasay (Information from Miss Nicholson, Raasay).
Visited by OS (A S P) 12 June 1961;
Visible on RAF air photographs 106g/SCOT/UK 36.3042/3043.

A township comprising thirty roofed buildings, one of which is labelled as a school, seven unroofed buildings, an enclosure and a head-dyke is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Inverness-shire, Isle of Skye 1879, sheet xix). One roofed, thirty-five unroofed buildings, some field walls and parts of a head-dyke are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1968).
