Full Description
Strange circular stone cairn (Plates 17 & 18), which is probably an excavated clearance cairn – excavated because it may have been thought of as a burial cairn which might contain grave goods. There is no direct record of the excavation of any of these cairns, however it is possible that it had been carried out under the direction of Rev J Joass of Golspie, who received a grant from the Royal Society of the Antiquaries of Scotland’ Rhind Fund in 1867 to undertake some work of this nature in East Sutherland.
The cairn is set in a grassy/brackeny oasis surrounded by short heather and is 20m to the N of the gate through the modern hill fence. The stone boulder mound is 6m in diameter and stands 1.5m high, with a 0.4m high stone lip surrounding a central 2m diameter sump of uneven stones. <1>
