Full Description

A photographic survey and report were submitted to the HER in August 2010 to comply with a condition on planning permission for the erection of a house and garage to the N of the site.

The kennels and adjoining dwelling are shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map. The dwelling, possibly original dating to the late 18th century, when estate workers were building their own homes, was remodelled when the kennels were added to the E wall. The dwelling consisted of three rooms; one for preparing the food for the dogs, the other two providing accomadation for estate staff, particularly during the shooting season. The first occupants to be recorded in a census are James and Susan Cumming, gamekeeper and housekeeper, in 1881.

The kennels themselves were built at some time between c.1840 and c.1870. The kennels were designed to provide two heated spaces for the dogs, for there is a fireplace in the east gable that would have provided warmth for the whole building. Divided by a dwarf partition wall, the kennels were probably timber-lined to dado level, with surviving lath-and-plaster above and across the coombed ceiling. The two enclosed yards to the south, originally cobbled but concreted over in more recent times, provided separate access to the two kennels – each having a door and small window in the front elevation. Iron fencing, some of which is still extant on site, would have provided 'runs' around these yards. Today the floor is of earth; its original form is unknown. Three air-vents survive in the upper part of the back elevation, with another through the roof. <1>
