Full Description

A carved sandstone capital fragment, found in a redeposited layer of cobble and stone in Trench 11 of monitoring works on the route of water mains renewal at Portmahomack. The front face shows relief carved and incised gothic scrollwork – each scroll measuring 0.17m in diameter – over two panels of the four surviving of a possible hexagonal column shaft fragment. A simple cruciform pictogram has been incised into the panel. The rear shows evidence of reuse as a drain cover, prior to its use in the make-up of the road.

Tentatively dated by Professor Martin Carver to the 13th century. <1>
