Full Description

A number of fragments of preserved wood were reported to the HER in November 2010. They are preserved in peat. The site is used for commercial peat extraction.

The wood was first noted in ditching carried out as part of the peat extraction operations, at least 2.0m below the surface. An additional layer of wood was noted in the ditches, at 0.5m above this level.

Some surface wood was noted, although this appears more vegetative and may be of more recent date.

It is impossible to date his wood on visual inspection alone, but no woodland is shown in this area on historic mapping. <1>
