NC65SW 12 61366 50789
This granite milestone stands on the E verge of the A836 public road at the foot of the NE flank of Creag na Speireig. Roughly triangular in section, the stone has two flat, dressed, faces on the front and a rounded rear that is roughly hewn. It measures 0.4m in breadth by 0.3m in depth and 0.64m in height, and the upper part presents a steeply-sloping facet to the road. The stone bears no inscription, but there is a bench-mark on its N side. The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherlandshire 1878, sheet XXVI) notes that the stone marked the distance in miles to ‘TONGUE 6½’ and ‘ALTNAHARROW 11½’.
