Full Description
A post-medieval farmstead was recorded during a walkover survey by West Coast Archaeological Services in 2012 at Glen Bracadale, Bracadale, Skye, prior to a proposed woodland creation scheme. It consisted of several components which were, east to west: an enclosure, a bothy and two houses. Part of the Glen Bracadale township.
The sub-rectangular grass covered turf or stone enclosure (feature 9b) measured 19m NE-SW by 12m wide over walls spread to 2.5m and up to 0.6m high. There was no visible entrance.
The bothy (feature 9a) was a grass-covered stone / turf sub-rectangular building measuring 9m NE-SW by 6.5m over walls spread to 1.5m and 0.6m high. There was a 1m-wide entrance in the south-west end.
The easternmost house (feature 9c) consisted of a grass-covered turf / stone T-shaped building measuring 15m NE-SW by 6m over walls spread to 1.5m and up 0.6m high. An annex ran NW and measured 7m long by 5.5m wide. There was a 0.8m-wide entrance in the north-west end.
The second, and westernmost, house (feature 9d) consisted of a grass-covered turf / stone terraced building revetted into the slope on its north side measuring 19m WNW-ESE by 5m over walls 1m wide and up 0.6m high. There were two entrances in the south-west wall 0.6m-wide. The building had been reused for field clearance. <1>
