Full Description

A post-medieval well was exposed and recorded during an excavation by Alba Archaeology on Academy Street, Inverness, in 2005. It was built of Old Red Sandstone and was of drystone construction. A considerable amount of the southeast part of the well above 4m O/D had been demolished when a foundation wall for a later building was laid. The foundation wall appeared to share its alignment with adjacent
buildings on Academy Street rather than Academy Street itself. This same alignment is also followed by previous buildings on the same site as seen on John Wood’s map of Inverness which dates from 1821, and arguably from John Home’s map of 1774. While it is probable that the intrusive foundations may date to more recent times, the possibility remains that the well may pre-date this particular alignment. <1>
