Full Description
A Pickett-Hamilton fort or pillbox was noted by ARCH's Evanton Wartime Remains project in 2013. A Pickett-Hamilton Fort (pillbox) had been moved to the shore post war, below the clay pigeon club, and was lying upside down in the intertidal zone at the time of this project. The concrete cylinder with firing slots, which would have been raised and lowered, survived, as did the hatch, remains of hand holds when entering or exiting, and pipes for the hand-operated gear to pump water out of the structure. These pillboxes were relatively rare – only c. 335 were thought to be in Britain (Smith 1989). It measured 6 feet (1.8m) on diameter and the width of the concrete was 4 inches (100mm). <1>
