Full Description

A stone spread or possible surface in Balblair Wood was investigated in 2012-13 by CFA Archaeology in advance of a proposed extension to the existing Balblair Quarry. It was sub-rectangular in shape and measured 3.4m by 1.4m and was found below the topsoil during the topsil stripping phase of the monitored works. A trench was excavated across the southeast end of the feature and this revealed that the stones overlay geological deposits. No artefacts were recovered either during excavation or subsequently when it was removed by machine. It was not considered to be of natural origin but its function was unknown. <1>
