Full Description
The site was visited and photographed by D Glass in June 2013. He described the site as:
"A circular sheep stell measuring 10m internal diameter, with a creep entrance on the south side. A stone dyke 11m long abuts the west side of the stell and curves to the south. There is a similar feature 8m long on the east side. The north wall of the stell stands on the footings of the southern end of a rectangular building. The footings measure approximately 14m by 5m externally but the original length might have been greater than this, the southern part having been lost under the stell. The building has three compartments.
The stell is generally well preserved and the coping is largely intact but the two wings are tumbled and ruinous. The building footings are grass covered.
The structure is marked as a sheepfold on the First Edition Six Inch OS map (surveyed 1872) where it is depicted as semicircular dyke open to the southeast, with a dyke and rectangular building projecting from the north side. The present configuration suggest that the semicircular dyke was built at the southern end of an earlier long building and was replaced by a circular stell at a date later than 1872. The two wings are the remains of the semicircular dyke, which might have functioned as either a sheep shelter or as an aid to penning sheep within the remains of the rectangular building." <1>
