Monument record MHG56847 - Building - Courtfa' Hill

The site was visited and photographed by D Glass in October 2013. He described the site as: "A rectangular building measuring 6 metres by 4.5 metres externally. The low walls stand to less than 0.5 metres in height and are grass-covered with no stone visible, but probing indicates that a stone course exists at ground level. The long axis is aligned north – south. Adjoining the south end there are indistinct traces of a small building or enclosure measuring 3 metres by 3 metres. At the north end of the building and separated from it by one metre there is a small plinth one metre square separated. Probing indicates stone underlies the vegetation covering both of these ancillary structures. The building stands on a low hillock within an area of grass measuring 30 metres east-west and 20 metres north-south. There are fragments of turf dykes on the east and north sides of the grass area. This green enclosure is a distinct feature which contrasts with the heather moor that surrounds it. A faint trackway connects the site to the access track for the croft of Courtfa’. The site is on a Common Grazing. Neither the building nor the enclosure is shown on the Traill Estate Map of 1836. Their absence might not be significant and could mean only that this was not a tenanted parcel of land. The building, enclosure and trackway are shown, together with a field number, on the 1876 OS 25 inch map. The same information is shown on the 1906 edition of this map, which also shows the area of the enclosure a 0.462 acres. There is no name for this place in current use locally. A former occupant of the Courtfa’ croft has recalled hearing the place referred to as ‘Frasers’ in c1950." <1>
