Full Description

The Royal Hotel was built in the late 1800s, and burnt down in 1973. On the first edition OS map (surveyed 1872) it is called the Victoria Hotel.

The site was investigated in 2015 as part of the ARCH project 'Invergordon in World War I'. During WWI the Royal Hotel and Commercial Hotel were taken over by the Admiralty, presumably to help with the acute housing shortage. The government also took over all pubs and breweries in the area in a move to control licensing hours and alcohol sales (this legislation ceased in 1971). <1>
