Full Description

WWII Nissen huts on the Invergordon shore.

The buildings were investigated in 2015 as part of the ARCH project 'Invergordon in World War I'. In the reclaimed land between the Central and East piers a number of buildings were erected in WWII. In WWI the entire area was part of the Naval dockyard area, but in WWII the line of the Naval dockyard is shown on a plan in private possession to run south from Shore Road. They appear on 1945 and 1947 aerial photographs. They are situated to the west of the Naval enclosure, so may relate to RAF activity at the port. <1>

On the OS 1:2500 map from 1968 these buildings are labelled ' Boatbuilding Works'. Only two of the buildings appear to remain to the present day (2016), or at least buildings on the same footprints. The larger building, set at an angle to the other three is definitely a nissen hut on the 1960s AP (as are the northern and central buildings) but the present building occupying the footprint is not.
