Full Description
A WWII military building, formed a nissen hut, in the Invergordon Dockyard area, housing workshops and offices related to electrical work and battery charging.
The buildings were investigated in 2015 as part of the ARCH project 'Invergordon in World War I'. During WWI land was reclaimed on the shore, by filling in from approximately the Central pier to Oakes Villa Stores. Railway lines were constructed along the shore to the east for transporting infill material. A WWI aerial photo shows few buildings in this area during WWI. However, by WWII there are a number within the area, as shown by a wartime plan in private collection and aerial photos. The infill area was for the most part taken over by the M.O.D., with a line running south from Shore Road. A WWII plan in private possession depicts a building to the east of the boat shed, oriented roughly northwest to southeast. It contained (from the west) a battery charing room, a battery workshop, two electrical stores, an electrical office, an electrical workshop, and at the end a machine workshop. A 1947 aerial photograph suggests it was a long nissen hut, with a timber addition to the northwest. It appears in an aerial photo frome the early 1960s but is gone by 1978. <1>
