Full Description
Oakes Villa on Saltburn Road, Invergordon. Apparently dating to 1860 but it probably replaced, or was a re-furbishment of, a house dating to before 1829. It was taken over by the Air Ministry in WWII.
Dated to 1860, architect Alexander Ross. <1> <2>
The building was investigated in 2015 as part of the ARCH project 'Invergordon in World War I'. Oakes Villa is depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps. Valuation Rolls show that it was taken over by the Air Ministry in WWII. It has a fine wrought iron gate from the High Street. <3>
A house on the site is mentioned in an advert in the Edinburgh Evening Courant on the 15th of October 1829 for an auction of the sale of land and buildings in Invergordon belonging to Charles Denham, hemp manufacturer of London. It is mentioned as being an '…excellent double dwelling house, containing a number of sunk cellars and keeping places'. <4>
