Full Description

A degraded hut circle at Kingsburgh, Skye.

140640 855733 Kingsburgh 11 EB220: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. Not reported by M Wildgoose but is associated with Site 16 in Kingsburgh Archaeological Survey 2003. This circular stone structure is beside EB221, (see MHG38862). A forestry fence bisects the structure which is very degraded. Bracken is growing to E of forestry fence, and the land is well grazed to W of fence. Structure may have a cairn associated with it; this is a rectangular built up mound. The structure is much robbed and an old track goes through it. A massive enclosure bank runs roughly N/S near to E wall of structure. The survey in 2010 interpreted the structure as a damaged HC, with a cairn and ruined shieling overlying. Outer diameter only could be measured, average 12.5m. The double skinned wall is 1m thick with max height 0.5m. The definite entrance is to S with average width 1.3m. <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details]

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 1999-2001 vertical APs [IS-L 08/02/2017].
