Full Description

A hut circle at Meall Glac na Daraich near Gairloch.

175109 881159 Meall Glac na Daraich 2 AMC002: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2009 as part of research for A Welti for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure situated on a terrace on a S facing hillside. Average inner diameter is 6.65m, outer diameter is 9m. Wall thickness is 1.5m with maximum height 0.25m. The entrance faces East, has width 1m and passage length 1m. The walls of the structure have been robbed to make a shieling hut on the W wall and an enclosure in the NW quadrant of the hut circle (see sketch). This enclosure is in two parts as if to make 2 pens for animals. AMC001 (see MHG57254) is at a distance of 150m and the North Erradale cluster around 600m. The hillside where AMC002 & AMC001 are situated has a lot of field walls and small enclosures awhich may be associated with the hut circles. Directly downhill from AMC002 at intervals of 30m. 50m from AMC002 are the remains of small ruins that look as if they may have been built on the sites of other hut circles, but impossible to measure with any accuracy. This HC is near to AMC002, but may be associated with both the N Erradale group around AM001 (600m distant), and also with AMC003 (see MHG57256) (500m distant) and the Sand River sites along similar contours. A conclusion may be drawn that whole hillside from Sand River to North Erradale was settled, all facing S. or SE. Nothing has been found on the N facing slopes. <1> <2>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 29/03/2017].
