A hut circle at Meall na Dubh near Gairloch.

179675 878357 Meall na Dubh 1 HAB009: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure lies on a very gentle north facing slope 50m from a river and in a grazed grassy landscape. The site is 1000m from the sea. There are field boundaries nearby, probably later, and a small rectangular enclosure is situated 5m from the SW wall of the HC. There are limited inland views from the site. Average internal diameter is 8.0m, external diameter is 10.7m. The double skinned wall is clearly delineated by large stones and is 1.5m thick, with maximum height 0.3m. The centre of the structure is slightly 'dished'. The probable entrance faces north east, with external width 1.4m, internal width 1m and passage length 1.2m. The sketch shows slightly extended terminals. HAB009 may be associated with HAB010 (see MHG57307) distant 20m, HAB011 (see MHG57308) distant 300m and HAB012 (MHG57309) distant 250m. <1> <2>
