A hut circle at Meall na Dubh near Gairloch.

179681 878323 Meall na Dubh 2 HAB010: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure is only 20m from HAB009 (see MHG57306) and lies in the same landscape of gently sloping grazed grassland, with a northern aspect. From the site there is a wide view to the sea, 1000m distant. The HC is on a small knoll and the ground slopes gently away all around it. The site is 50m from a river and 300m from a freshwater loch. An enclosure, which could be contemporary, lies 10m to the northwest. Other field boundaries are near. The measurements taken N/S are very approximate as much of the two southern quadrants are denuded of stone. Measured E/W the inner diameter is 8.9m and the external diameter 10.5m. The double skinned wall thickness is 1.4m with maximum height 0.5m. No entrance could be identified. HAB010 may be associated with HAB009, distant 20m, HAB011 (see MHG57308) distant 300m and HAB012 (see MHG57309) distant 200m. <1> <2>
