Full Description

One of a number of hut circles at Badentarbat near Loch Vatachan. Originally recorded by RCAHMS in 1994 as ACHIL94 418.

201061 910609 Loch Vatachan Badentarbat 3 CMM208 (ACHILL94/418): The hut circle was visited by A Welti and C MacNeilage in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure was classified by RCAHMS in 1994 as one of a group of three sited near to the head dyke. Associated field systems, clearance cairns and lazy beds are present in the landscape but are hard to distinguish in 2010 due to vegetation growth, mainly heather and grass. The HC is situated above the head dyke, on a gentle east facing slope above a flat boggy valley. The landscape around the structure is mainly heather and grass. The structure is obscured by tall heather and bracken. Some large inner facing stones are visible. A stream runs 100m distant and the structure is 700m from a freshwater loch. There are panoramic views westward to the Assynt mountains. Average inner diameter is 7.15m, outer diameter is 11.25m. The double skinned wall is 2.0 m thick with maximum height 0.7m. There is a clearly defined east facing entrance, with internal width 1.6m, external width 1.3m. The passage length is 3.5m, indicating extended terminals. CMM208 may be associated, in a linear cluster along similar contour lines, with CMM207 (see MHG24525) distant 270m, CMM209 (see MHG57315) distant 270m, and CMM206 (see MHG57314) distant 270m, as well as with the clusters of structures on the slopes to the north (see MHG26621, MHG57311, MHG57312, MHG57313 and MHG 26622.) <1> <2>
