Full Description

A hut circle at Inverkirkaig.

Two hut circles c 12.5m and c 6.5m in diameter. The surrounding area has been used for shieling/grazing activity. <1>

209016 919586 Inverkirkaig 2 KC004: The hut circle was visited by A Welti and K Clarke in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. This circular stone structure lies beside a modern deer fence and is engulfed by mature heather. The walling to the west is not discernable. The structure is surrounded on the S side by a slow flowing ditched water course. The centre of the structure forms a convex mound, densely heather covered. Average inner diameter is 5.5m. No measurement of the outer diameter was possible. The wall seemed to be double skinned. The distance of KC003 (see MHG19445) is 12 m. A possible shieling structure lies 2m to W. GS044 lies at a distance of 40m. <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs. <4>
